I also applied in Jennings, a friend of mine applied at the same time. She got her check Thursday. I talk to a few people who got theirs on Tuesday. Nothing yet for me. The Red Cross had a car driving around our neighborhood yesterday. But no one in our neighborhood has gotten anything yet. I read on the KPLC site last week that Jeff Davis applications had to be corrected for some reason, but you did not have to reappliy. They said they were doing them on a case by case basis pending damages, I still have not figured out how the damages are reported to Red Cross, it was not on the application anywhere. Does anybody know?
LORINDAT - After Rita hit, the Red Cross and FEMA sent damage assesment teams into the SW LA. They surveyed the damage, took pictures, and then sat down to determine the hardest hit areas. The organizations use this information to determine what areas (usually by zip code) become elible for financial assistance.
I think what the Red Cross representative was trying to say is that the Red Cross will look at each application and then compare the applicant's residence information to their list of areas (usually by zip code) that qualify for assistance.
If you qualify, then you will most likely be receiving a check. If you do not qualify, then you will receive a letter indicating that you were denied and why. This letter will also contain information on how to appeal the qualification decision.
I would give it another week. If you still have not heard from the Red Cross, then I would call 1-866-GET-INFO (Red Cross Information). They will not have access to the financial information, but they will have the ability to open a case that will contain you specific information. Think of it as a fancy email to the financial folks.
